| Accused Police Killer Bailed for Birthday |

EMILY WATKINS January 20th, 2010 A MAN accused of killing an off-duty police officer in a Territory nightclub was free to celebrate his birthday last night after he was given bail. But Michael Simon Martyn was not allowed a beer to celebrate his 39th birthday yesterday - his strict bail conditions included not being allowed to drink alcohol or leave his aunt's home after 8pm. Mr Martyn is facing a charge of manslaughter over the death of Sergeant Brett Meredith, who died after he was allegedly punched at Club 23 at Katherine in the early hours of New Year's Day. Sgt Meredith's wife, Amee - also a NT police officer - attended the hearing accompanied by Constable Kevin Carr, the officer who was with Sgt Meredith on the night he was allegedly assaulted. She broke down in tears as Magistrate Sue Oliver told the court Mr Martyn would be granted bail with strict conditions. Mr Martyn has been in custody since January 1, and wanted bail to go back to South Australia to be with his pregnant partner and three young children. Read More. |
