A strong 5.9 aftershock rocked the capital Port-au-Prince on Wednesday, causing panic and alarm but no major damage. And in much-needed good news, an 11-year-old girl was found alive among debris last night while a separate group of rescuers plucked a 12-year-old and her seven-year-old brother from wreckage. The US says it is sending 4,000 sailors and marines to Haiti, adding to the 12,000 already on the ground. The 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit has been diverted from what would have been a tour in the Mediterranean and Europe. More aid is getting through to desperate survivors of last week's quake - but there are complaints that some areas are being ignored by aid agencies. Read More. |
