LANCASTER -- The Southeastern Correctional Institution plans to retain its crown as the most giving staff in the state. In 2007, the prison, located just outside of Lancaster on B.I.S. Road, contacted the American Red Cross about coming out and starting a blood drive among the staff. "This first couple of times they came out we gave between 15 to 18 units of blood," SCI Deputy Warden Darryl Graves said. "Not a lot of people came out the first couple of times. But it has steadily grown." In 2009, the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction came up with a north-south competition for blood donations. As a way to make it fun, the departments at SCI competed against each other to see which could get the most donors. "The winning departments would get ice cream," Graves said. "Now the prison is providing between 35 and 40 units of blood each drive." The institution that had the highest percentage of employees participating in the regular blood drive was SCI. "We now have around 23 percent of the staff donating blood regularly," Graves said. "We had 200 first-time donors." One of the people donating blood Wednesday was Corrections Officer Joe Carr. "I started giving blood when they started coming out to the prison," Carr said. "It is just a really good way to help our community, and they really need the blood." Carr said he had been giving blood regularly since 2007 and had only missed one blood drive because of training requirements. Christina Wharbington, of the American Red Cross, said the drives in institutions across the state have been great for blood supply in Ohio. "It has really worked out well," Wharbington said. "It's convenient for the employees, and it really helps during the summer months when donations fall off." The drive on Wednesday was a big help, Wharbington said. "We like to have a three-day supply of O-negative and O-positive blood," Wharbington said. "Right now we are down to a day's supply of O-negative and one-and-a-half day supply of O-positive." SCI Warden Sheri Duffey said this is one of the times she doesn't have to push people to participate. Read More. |
