SIOUX FALLS, S.D.—Oh porn, you elusive art form, you. South Dakota inmate Joseph Fields III is suing to make the Corrections Department of Nebraska define pornography, and to reimburse him for books he ordered and that were confiscated because they contain nude pictures. Fields calls them instructional art books; South Dakota State Penitentiary calls them lurid. Among the titles confiscated were Spectrum 14: The Best in Contemporary Fantastic Art and John Howe Fantasy Art Workshop. The 44-year-old inmate, a self-taught artist and member of the Omaha tribe of Nebraska, claims that drawing is his form of "personal enrichment" and that the prison offers no art classes and has few art books in the library to help him hone his craft."My purpose is merely to learn and improve my own personal artistic techniques," he said in an earlier request for review of his case.
