A man convicted of stabbing to death his ex-wife and two of her young children after Mich. prison officials mistakenly released him has been sentenced to life in prison without parole. Daniel Franklin, 34, received the mandatory sentence last Tuesday, about two weeks after a jury found him guilty of first-degree murder. Franklin told the judge he understood "how everybody feels" but insisted he was innocent and would appeal the conviction. Franklin gave up parental rights to his 4-year-old daughter, D'anajeh, the only survivor of the attack. Prosecutors said D'anajeh spent the night alone with the bodies of her mother and half-sisters. The girl's statements to police helped convict her father in the June 22 deaths of Machekia Robinson, 28; Taria Johnson, 8, and Rockell Johnson, 10. Their bodies were found at the woman's Pontiac town house. Franklin was mistakenly paroled from prison on a drug charge five days before the killings. The Michigan Department of Corrections said a record-keeping error led to his release. He should not have been eligible for parole until May 2006. |
