| Murder trial postponed |

By ALISHA WYMAN Register Staff Writer | Posted: Monday, January 25, 2010 12:00 am A trial for two suspects in a 2007 gang murder, scheduled to start Tuesday, has been delayed until September to allow more time to find another suspect who remains at large. Stephen Russell Barrios, 20, and Daniel Ortega, 20, remain in custody and are charged with the shooting death of Ricardo Gonzalez, 19. Gonzalez was shot during a clash between the rival Sureño and Norteño gangs Dec. 8, 2007, at a Laurel Street apartment complex. Prosecutors believe Jaime Gonzalez Peña Jr. — who under one theory is the suspected shooter — fled to Mexico. Napa County Deputy District Attorney Fred Gutierrez filed a motion in December asking for a delay in the trial to allow more time to arrest and extradite Peña. Gutierrez took over the case after former Chief Deputy District Attorney John Goold left the Napa prosecutors’ office in September. The change in attorneys also is a reason for the request.
