Trial starts today for cartel suspect

LAREDO — The trial of a suspected assassin for the Zetas drug cartel is scheduled to start in federal court here today in a case that has shed light on the inner workings of the Mexican drug underworld.

Armando “Cachetes” Garcia, 24, has pleaded not guilty in the case, which involves the gunning down of Jesus Resendez, 36, and his 15-year-old nephew in 2006 as they drove down a well-traveled highway in south Laredo, headed for a fishing trip.

The executions renewed fears that the violence south of the U.S.-Mexico border was spilling into Texas.

In 2007, federal prosecutors issued a 47-count indictment accusing Garcia and dozens of others of committing various crimes, including murder and torture, to protect the Zetas' territory and shipments of illegal drugs.

Many of the co-conspirators already have been found guilty and are serving time in prison. Law officers still are looking for several others, whose names are blacked out on the indictment.

Sources familiar with the investigation said last year that Jesus Resendez was an accomplished drug trafficker from Rio Bravo, a small town south of Laredo, who was involved with the Texas Syndicate prison gang. He had worked for the Sinaloa Cartel and their rivals, the Zetas, as the two organizations battled for control of the highly lucrative drug-trafficking routes in the Laredo-Nuevo Laredo area. Resendez had sparked the ire of leaders on both sides of the war by hijacking loads of illegal drugs, the sources said.
