| Commissioner says system is in jeopardy |

January 24, 2010 · Ballooning costs and a Supreme Court case have pushed the overcrowding in West Virginia jails and prisons to a crisis stage, according to Jim Rubenstein, Commissioner of the Division of Corrections. The population in state prisons has quadrupled in 2 decades to more than 6500. There are no beds available in West Virginia’s 14 correctional centers, says Rubenstein, and the regional jails are stuck picking up the overflow. “There are 10 regional jails in this state, and on any given day there are approximately 1300 inmates who have been sentenced to the care and custody of corrections who are sitting in a regional jail awaiting bed space to open in one of our facilities,” said Rubenstein.
