OTTUMWA, Iowa -- It's been more than three days since convict Robert Andrews left a work release facility and never came back. Andrews was serving a 31-year sentence for attempted murder, assault on a peace officer and escape. So why was he let out of prison just a third of the way into his sentence? Court records show Robert Andrews was in the process of robbing someone in 1997 when it turned very violent. Despite his past, the parole board decided it was time for him to have more freedom. Friday afternoon, Robert Andrews walked away from an Ottumwa work release facility to look for a job. That was part of a plan to transition him from convict to co-worker. When he didn't show up by his assigned 6:30 return time, the Department of Corrections began poring through his past in prison. "Anything we have, in any case, visiting records, telephone calls, and acquaintances. All that information we provide to law enforcement," said Fred Scaletta with the Department of Corrections.
