| Biden's choice made - AG race can begin |

Now that Attorney General Beau Biden has publicly announced he will seek a second term, expect the race for the state's top prosecutor to start taking shape. Biden danced around questions of his political future, feeding more than a year of speculation that he would run for his father's U.S. Senate seat instead of attorney general. This kept others from announcing their political intentions. But Monday's announcement set the tone. "With so much being in flux, some people wanted to see how things shook out," State Republican Party Chairman Tom Ross said. "It's certainly going to clarify things on both sides." No Republicans have announced they are running, but one can be expected in the "very near future." "We don't have an announced candidate," Ross said. "We have several quality folks that we have been speaking with." Some GOP names that have surfaced as potential attorney general candidates include former U.S. Attorney Colm F. Connolly and Ferris Wharton, a state and federal prosecutor-turned public defender. Wharton, who ran against Biden in 2006, has said before he would consider running again for the office -- so long as he didn't have to challenge Biden. But when contacted Monday, he would not discuss the matter. Former Republican Rep. Bob Valihura, who lost his seat during the 2008 Democratic sweep, said he has been approached to run for attorney general and is considering it. However, Monday's announcement will make him think more about his decision. "Today's development is one which is a surprise, given the sort of scuttlebutt around the state over the last year," Valihura said. "It would require taking the even harder view of the entire matter before anyone, including myself, would even jump in." Valihura, a corporate lawyer with 23 years' experience and 10 years as a state representative, did not say when he would make up his mind. Read More. |
