In 1 Day Border Patrol Seizes More than 3,100 Pounds of Marijuana Exemplifies Effectiveness of Border Patrol’s Strategy Ajo, Ariz. – U.S. Border Patrol agents assigned to the Ajo Station seized more than 3,100 pounds of marijuana within the past 24 hours in the west desert area. The estimated value of the marijuana is close to $2.5 million. The Ajo Border Patrol Station has documented a significant increase in the number of marijuana seizes which is a direct result of combining additional agents with new tactics, technology and infrastructure. The integration of new technology in conjunction with traditional Border Patrol operations and specialty units such as the Horse Patrol has proven extremely effective in making interdictions and reducing the ability of drug smugglers to succeed. Border Patrol agents have been extremely effective at preventing large quantities of illegal drugs from reaching our communities,” said Ajo Station’s Patrol Agent in Charge Brian Hastings. “The criminal element involved in drug and illegal alien trafficking over our border is not taken lightly. The Tucson Sector faces unique challenges given the scope of drug trafficking and illegal crossings, but our specialty units give us the flexibility to address key areas.” In the first three months of this fiscal year (October through December), agents in the Tucson Sector seized more than 270,000 pounds of marijuana with an estimated value greater than $122 million. During the same period last year, the Tucson Sector seized more than 230,000 pounds of marijuana.
