| Ficano may privatize jail food to cut costs |

Detroit -- Wayne County spends more on food for its jail inmates than Oakland and Macomb counties combined, a disparity the county is trying to resolve, County Executive Robert Ficano says. Wayne County budgeted more than $4 million for food services for the 2009-10 fiscal year. Oakland and Macomb spend under $2 million. Ficano said he's aware of the inordinate amount of money spent on jail food. "That's something we're working to get a handle on," he said. Wayne County Sheriff's spokeswoman Paula Bridges said the high cost of jail food has been on the county's radar for some time. "The food service management contract has been an objective of (Ficano's) for the last 18 months," Bridges said. "They advised the Sheriff's Office while Warren Evans was sheriff that this service cost is too expensive, and the county needs to outsource this service." The county has recommended a vendor, Sterling Heights-based Continental Services, which, if approved, would be responsible for all aspects of food services for the jails and Juvenile Detention Facility.
