Six inmates used the sharp end of fingernail clipper to escape from Surry County (N.C.) Jail and still were on the loose Monday, authorities said. Jail officials said the men, who had bunked together for at least two weeks, used the clipper to break through their Sheetrock ceiling at some point after 10 p.m. Saturday night. Several inmates interviewed by detectives said that "they didn't see anything, hear anything," said Sgt. Mary Overby, a jail supervisor. One of Overby's officers was making the day's first rounds to distribute medicine when he discovered the men were missing at about 6:30 a.m., Overby said. State law mandates that inmates be checked every 30 minutes. The last time the inmates had been checked was at 5:30 a.m., and everything appeared to be in order, Deputy Marty Doss said. Overby said the men had rolled their sheets under their blankets to give the illusion they were all tucked in their beds. The escapees were identified as Matthew W. Shinault, 39; Randy Lee, 36; Archie D. Robertson, 36; Paul Vincent Callas, 37; Rene Jeremias Fernandez, 22; and Timothy James Tate, 24. They were being held on a number of different felony and misdemeanor charges. The jail, which had 95 inmates Saturday night, has security cameras, but apparently none of the staff saw or heard the men escaping, Overby said. |
