The Federal Bureau of Investigation recently made its first arrest in the 2007 robbery of Murphy Jewelers in Pottsville and may soon make another, Pottsville police Det. Glenn A. Dove said Monday. "This has been on the top of my priority list to get this case closed. And I've been frustrated it's taken so long," Dove said. While the FBI is in charge of the case, city police have been assisting. In the past two years, they've gathered DNA and fingerprint evidence, interviewed witnesses from out of state and heard a confession. Recently, a federal grand jury gave the FBI permission to make two arrests. The identity of a third robber hasn't been pinned down. Meanwhile, Dove keeps a picture of the trio of robbers, taken from security camera footage, taped to the wall near his desk. On Jan. 26, the FBI arraigned Balir Akeem Starkey, 23, of 136 E. 18th St., Chester, Delaware County, in federal court in Scranton on charges of robbery and possession of a firearm, Dove said. Starkey is an inmate at State Correctional Institution/Graterford, Montgomery County, incarcerated on unrelated charges. A federal grand jury has also given FBI Special Agent Thomas Neeson, Allentown, authorization to arrest Thomas Lee Brown Jr., 28, of 1319 Rainer Rd., Chester, according to Dove. Brown is an inmate at State Correctional Institution/Fayette, LaBelle, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections Web site. He is also in prison on other charges, Dove said. "My understanding is they issued the warrant based on the grand jury's recommendation and Brown just hasn't been arraigned on the federal warrant yet. But that's coming," Dove said. Read More. |
