An unidentified inmate at Bridgewater, Mass., State Hospital allegedly set fire to his mattress yesterday morning, sending five corrections officers to the hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation. According to Massachusetts Corrections Department Spokesman Justin Latini, the inmate set fire to the mattress when he was alone in the cell. When hospital personnel entered the man's cell to respond to the fire, the man allegedly assaulted a medical staffer. The corrections officers removed the inmate from his cell and then turned their attention to extinguishing the fire. The inmate, whom Latini declined to identify, was not injured. The corrections officers were treated and released from local hospitals. The fire is under investigation Latini said. It has not yet been determined how the inmate started the fire, he said. Inmates are prohibited from possessing matches and lighters, he said. Bridgewater State Hospital is a smoke-free facility. Latini said the incident occurred at about 6 a.m. yesterday. He said all inmates in the unit were temporarily evacuated. Bridgewater State Hospital is part of the state correctional system, and houses inmates with special problems, including sex offenders. Latini declined to specify the reason for the man's incarceration. |
