| Correctional center smoking ban goes into effect |

The days of inmates lighting up a cigarette came to an end Monday across the state after the Virginia Department of Corrections enacted a tobacco ban that snuffed out smokes and chewing tobacco for both convicts and employees alike. "I think you're talking healthier people," said Debbie Swisher, operations officer for Augusta Correctional Center in Craigsville. "That's the long-term goal." Inmates and employees at ACC were notified in January 2009 of the ban. Although the prison's commissary stopped selling tobacco products to prisoners in November, many continued to partake in the habit. "A lot of them had them stored up," Swisher said. Prior to the ban, inmates were permitted to smoke inside their cells, while staff had designated areas to light up outside the prison walls. On Monday, Swisher said the ban on tobacco went into effect at the prison, meaning inmates had to be butt-free. Read More. |
