| Multnomah County Chairman, wants County Commissioners to run Jail. |

PORTLAND, Ore. - Multnomah County’s top administrator said Tuesday he’s committed to working with the sheriff to fix problems with the county’s jails despite recent friction between them on who will control the system. “We’re both committed,” said Multnomah County Chair Ted Wheeler who has proposed taking control of the jails from the sheriff and putting it under the authority of county commissioners. “This sheriff and I want to work well together, and we’re committed to make it happen.” On Monday, Multnomah County Sheriff Dan Staton said he wanted more time to work out jail issues and that he had a well-trained staff to make it happen. He also said that Wheeler wanted to change how the sheriff gets his job: by appointment instead of through the voice of the voters. But on Tuesday Staton said he misspoke and said Wheeler had made no such statement. Wheeler sent a letter to fellow commissioners on Monday and copied Staton. In it he clarified his position and restated his support for creating a Multnomah County Department of Corrections that would be accountable to the county commissioners and chairman. Read More. |
