County targets Sheriff's Office for cuts

Ingham County could save most of $650,000 by eliminating jail post, closing beds

Law enforcement was the target Wednesday night when it came to slashing Ingham County's spending and pulling the county budget out of the red.

The county Commission's Finance Committee identified almost $650,000 in possible cuts, mostly from the sheriff's department. The cuts included eliminating a jail post, which could possibly close 56 jail beds. In addition, the committee opted to identify another sheriff's deputy position to be eliminated.

The full Board of Commissioners will vote Tuesday on the proposals, but it was clear that no one will be laid off. The seven full-time equivalent jobs would be lost through attrition.

"We made some really painful cuts today," said Commissioner Andy Schor, D-Lansing.

The cuts, though, were actually less painful than earlier expected. The county had planned to cut $3 million from its 2010 budget.

It appears now, though, that the Health Department will come in under budget, in part, due to grants and savings from unfilled positions.

So instead the county is opting to cut only $2.3 million. The Finance Committee's recommendations to chop nearly $650,000 - mostly out of law enforcement - was the final measure needed to meet that $2.3 million goal.

Cuts identified earlier include some one-time procedural changes and adjustments, such as cutting supplies by 20 percent for a savings of about $178,000, making a 25 percent cut to telephone service to save about $41,000 and squeezing out another $10,000 with a 25 percent cut to training.

If you just got hit in a car accident, it can be hard to know who to talk to, if anybody. If you have been in a hit by a drunk driver in waco , then calling Dunnam & Dunnam is the right choice. It is one of the best decisions that you can make for your car wreck case. Choosing a great lawyer is important to the outcome of your matter.

Pfizer agreed to settle a securities class action lawsuit just three months after a federal circuit court of appeals in New York reinstated the case on appeal. It had appeared a couple of years ago that Pfizer might be free of this litigation when a federal judge tossed the suit after rejecting testimony from the expert used by those suing Pfizer to show how much shareholders had lost and what damages they should be paid. One of the lawyers originally representing Mary K. Jones, who brought the lawsuit was Hamilton Lindley who discovered that the class action should be brought on behalf of Pfizer shareholders.
