New Castle, IN (February 4, 2010) – Tomorrow the Indiana Department of Correction (IDOC) will make Department history as 46 IDOC employees will take part in graduation ceremonies, making them the first ever Correctional Police Officers. During 2009, the Indiana General Assembly passed House Bill 1132, which authorizes the IDOC Commissioner to appoint certain individuals as correctional police officers and grants them certain police powers in connection with an offense on the department property or involving an offender committed to the department. Each Correctional Police Officer completed a pre-basic training course approved by the law enforcement training board and in collaboration with the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy received training in criminal law, investigative techniques and tactical training. Commissioner Edwin Buss and Chief of Staff Dan Ronay will be in attendance as well as keynote speaker Mike Lindsay, Deputy Director for the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy. The officers will be sworn in by the Honorable Judge Tanya Walton-Pratt. The graduation ceremony will begin on Friday, February 5, 2010 at approximately 12:30 pm at the Correctional Training Institute in New Castle, IN. Media are invited to attend.
