The Denton County Jail recently passed its annual inspection with no deficiencies after a surprise three-day inspection by the Texas Commission on Jail Standards. “We must meet certain standards relating to guards, safety standards, food and the infirmary,” said Tom Reedy, public information officer. “For as long as I’ve been here, which is five years, we have passed every inspection. We’ve always had a good record with the state that goes back further than this administration.” During its inspection, the commission inspects the construction, equipment, maintenance and operation of the jail facilities under its jurisdiction. It also inspects the custody, care and treatment of inmates and investigates programs of rehabilitation, education and recreation for inmates confined in county jails. Precinct 2 County Commissioner Ron Marchant and Sheriff Benny Parkey formally accepted the inspection results. State jail inspector Fred St. Amant of Austin praised the efficiency and helpfulness of the jail personnel. “Quite frankly, Denton County’s jail is well-run by a knowledgeable and hard-working staff, from the detention officers to the support staff to the administration,” Amant said. The Denton County Jail is the ninth largest in the state. It has a capacity of 1,400 inmates and encompasses five facilities. According to the commission’s Web site, the current population is 1,027. The jail is staffed by 389 men and women who are all state certified. In 2009, 14,426 people were booked into the jail. “Security and public safety are top priorities, and we rely on an excellent staff of professionals to provide a secure, safe and well-run facility for the citizens of Denton County,” Parkey said.
