SACRAMENTO, CA - Several inmates released early on Sunday came off the bus at the Sacramento County Jail to find a group of volunteers waiting with food, packets of supplies, and useful information to get them back on their feet. The volunteer group says it was motivated by the media attention given to the new early release law. They gathered at 6:00 a.m. Sunday morning in front of the jail in downtown Sacramento. Michelle Purcell helped lead the way on the effort. Her group, known as the Project Paul prison outreach, chose the mission because they believe the inmates need all the help they can get. "It's been all over the news," said Purcell. "Basically, we just wanted to come down and provide practical needs for the inmates who are coming today." "I'm just excited to see their faces as we give them these street sheets, and tell them the resources we have in Sacramento." After a couple of hours of waiting, the Sacramento County inmate bus arrived. The vehicle emptied, and the people on board walked out to the sidewalk in front of the jail. They had to pause to figure out what was happening in front of them. They were being met by people they didn't know. Purcell and her group were there to help the former prisoners get their lives back on track. Some volunteers gave hugs, and others shared prayers with the men and women as they left the jail.
