| Overcrowding Dilemma Solved with Move to Stone County |

PASCAGOULA — Jackson County chose a less expensive way of housing extra prisoners Monday until it can solve the overcrowding dilemma at the county jail on a more permanent basis. The county Board of Supervisors voted to take Stone County up on its offer to house prisoners for $30 a day each, a savings of $15 a day per prisoner over what George and Pearl River counties are charging. Sheriff Mike Byrd said he had 20 prisoners on their way to Stone County before the supervisors’ meeting ended. The county sends about 80 prisoners a day to jails in other counties. Using Stone County will be a big savings, Byrd said. Even if they just send 50 prisoners to the less-expensive quarters, it would save the county $22,500 a month, a financial officer said.
