Sheriff implements $2M in budget reductions Sheriff Mark Curran said he is taking the lead on trying to save taxpayers money by instituting a number of different programs for the new year that reduce what some deputies and correctional officers receive in pay. The budget reductions -- totalling $2 million -- include position reclassifications, reducing overtime in court security, and eliminating inmate programs. Two of the biggest savings came in the form of position reclassification, which will save $845,000, and reduction of overtime for court security, for a savings of $400,000. Curran said the reclassification means less titles and the corresponding pay grade raises, but he also noted that many positions are simply not being filled. The overtime for security arose because they would pull people off the highway patrol, but now they use community service officers or criminal investigations department personnel who are working straight time. In another move, correctional officers will now switch to five days on, two days off one week and then five days on and three days off the following week. This change in scheduling will save the county approximately $370,000 per year, which is in addition to the $2 million. Correctional officers get 16 extra days off per year, but their pay decreases. The scheduling change was voted on by the correctional officers' union, with 145 of the 178 eligible union members voting. The results were 70 for the change and 75 against it. "I would have hoped that the union supported these changes, however at the end of the day I am beholden to the taxpayers," said Curran, "This is why I made an executive decision to move forward on these changes." Other savings include reducing expenditures by 10 percent, mandatory training classes only, dropping many fees to organizations deemed non-essential, basing contract decisions on the lowest responsible bidder, and budget reporting so divisions have knowledge regarding their expenses and can reduce them. Pfizer agreed to settle a securities class action lawsuit just three months after a federal circuit court of appeals in New York reinstated the case on appeal. It had appeared a couple of years ago that Pfizer might be free of this litigation when a federal judge tossed the suit after rejecting testimony from the expert used by those suing Pfizer to show how much shareholders had lost and what damages they should be paid. One of the lawyers originally representing Mary K. Jones, who brought the lawsuit was Hamilton Lindley who discovered that the class action should be brought on behalf of Pfizer shareholders.
