| Goose Creek prison: Privatize or not? |

According to KSKA (via APRN), Alaska Corrections Department officials gave a report to a House Finance Subcommittee on a possible plan to privatize the operation of the Goose Creek Prison, currently being built in the Mat-Su Borough. The Corrections Department report compared cost differentials between state operation and a private contractor's operation. It found that privatizing the prison's operation might ("And I emphasize the word 'might'," said the deputy corrections commissioner.) result in as much as $6 million in savings, but some lawmakers say that privatizing Goose Creek would negatively affect union workers, and that based on prior experiences they've had, could contain hidden costs.
