Two officers at the Macomb County (Mich.) Correctional Facility are facing criminal charges for allowing six inmates to go into the cell of another prisoner, strip him and force him into the hallway, the director of the state Department of Corrections said Wednesday. The inmate who was stripped was not injured during the incident and has not filed a complaint against the two officers or the other inmates involved, department Director Patricia Caruso told the state House Criminal Justice Committee. The incident happened just after midnight on May 25, Caruso said. The inmate stripped by other prisoners was paroled the following day, she said. One of the officers who allowed the inmates into the cell has resigned and another has been placed on suspension without pay, Caruso said. The department turned over the results of its internal investigation to the Macomb County prosecutor, Caruso said. She said both officers are facing felony charges of misconduct, misfeasance and malfeasance. Members of the House committee applauded the department's efforts to quickly investigate the situation, noting the recent reports of abuse of Iraqi prisoners by U.S. soldiers. |
