Inmates doused with pepper spray on bus

Deputy sheriffs fired pepper spray at 10 inmates causing a disturbance on a bus bound for Superior Court Thursday morning and subsequently found a shank weapon in the vehicle's stairwell, said Gary Dias, high sheriff of the R.I. Division of Sheriffs.
Dias said those 10 inmates in the fully occupied 32-passenger bus were returned to the Adult Correctional Institutions, Cranston, rather than their scheduled Superior Court appearances.
"They were yelling and screaming, and trying to force the gate door open," Dias said.
Neither he nor the state Department of Corrections could say yesterday whether the weapon and the disturbance aimed at the two deputy sheriffs handling the bus were related or that a breakout was being attempted.
When the pepper-sprayed prisoners returned to the ACI, they were sent to the infirmary for medical treatment, sprayed down from the chemicals and, after evaluations were completed, sent into segregation lockup, said Joy Fox, spokesperson for the state Department of Corrections.
"As of now, only three remain in segregation," Fox said shortly before 5 p.m. Thursday. The incident, on South Main Street near Superior Court, occurred shortly after 9 a.m., Dias said.
The other 22 prisoners on the bus were brought into Superior Court holding cells for pending court appearances, Dias and Fox said.
As a result of this incident -- which remains under investigation with state authorities -- the Division of Sheriffs also confirmed that prisoners scheduled to be transported to court in Washington and Kent counties had those appearances canceled.
