February 22, 2010 Yuma, AZ -- Budget cuts may lead to the release of dozens of dangerous juveniles into Yuma County. It's all part of Arizona Governor Jan Brewer's plan to balance the budget. She estimates the state will save $65 million a year by closing the Juvenile Corrections Department. County officials are now expecting an increase in bills and in crime.

More than 50 high-risk juvenile offenders are expected to move back into Yuma County. Administrator Robert Pickels is now crunching the numbers. The first bill is $2 million to expand the county's juvenile detention.

"It would be knocking down walls and adding additional pods onto the existing detention facility," says Pickels. Tack on another $1 million to staff the larger facility and about $500,000 to have programs typically provided by the Corrections Department.

"There's an educational program. There's a substance abuse program, [and] a parole specialist that's assigned to that juvenile offender."

The grand total is about $3.5 million.

Juvenile Court Director Tim Hardy says that number doesn't come close to the cost to the community.

Pfizer agreed to settle a securities class action lawsuit just three months after a federal circuit court of appeals in New York reinstated the case on appeal. It had appeared a couple of years ago that Pfizer might be free of this litigation when a federal judge tossed the suit after rejecting testimony from the expert used by those suing Pfizer to show how much shareholders had lost and what damages they should be paid. One of the lawyers originally representing Mary K. Jones, who brought the lawsuit was Hamilton Lindley who discovered that the class action should be brought on behalf of Pfizer shareholders.
