Inmates face drug, assault charges

A pair of incidents in the Hawkins County (Tenn.) Jail have resulted in inmates facing additional charges, including drug charges following an investigation into drug related activity occurring in the jail.
Based on information jail personnel along with officers with the Hawkins County Sheriff's Department Narcotics Unit conducted a search of the entire jail on May 21.
During the search of the E-cellblock officers reported finding 10 marijuana cigarettes, an additional quantity of marijuana in a plastic bag, several Xanax pills and $249 in cash on inmate Marlon B. Ellis, 33, 116 Little Spring Road Lot #4.
As a result of the search, Ellis was charged with possession of marijuana for resale and possession of schedule IV drugs for resale.
In an unrelated incident, also involving the E-cellblock, two inmates were each charged with assaulting an officer.
Justin D. Thompson, 18, 124 Bloomingdale Pike, Kingsport and James R. Powell, 19, incomplete address given, were each charged with two counts of assaulting an officer.
According to a report filed by jail officer Scott Stewart, on the evening of May 26 jail personnel responded to a disturbance in the E-cellblock.
The report states while trying to remove Thompson from the cellblock he became combative. The report states Thompson used his hands to strike Stewart and jail officer Bill Henard.
Using similar language the report states Powell assaulted Stewart and jail officer Robert Wolfe.
