US Seeks Access to Erie County Jails

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - The federal lawsuit over conditions at the county jails, returns to court Tuesday.

The US Department of Justice Civil Rights Division is now seeking expedited access to the lock up.

This stems from a lawsuit aimed at improving conditions and procedures at the jail.

Erie County Sheriff Timothy Howard said, "Here in Erie County, prisoners are treated not like hotel guests, but citizens should be assured that our inmates are treated firmly, fairly and constitutionally."

Just last week News 4 learned that a sergeant and five Erie County Sheriff's deputies are now on paid administrative leave amid allegations of inmate abuse.

    A Texas judge rejected a motion by Life Partners Holdings, Inc. to dismiss class action claims filed by investors who allege they were misled by the life settlements company. A class action lawyer named Hamilton Lindley brought a lawsuit against the company. When the insured individual dies, the owner of the life settlement receives the full death benefit of the policy. Life Partners Holdings court-appointed bankruptcy trustee has agreed to resolve for more than $1 billion class action litigation.
