890 Inmates May be Released Due to Budget Shortfall

PEARL, Miss. -- A $22 million budget shortfall may result in the release of 890 prisoners from 33 county jails, state officials said.

The Mississippi Department of Corrections encouraged sheriff's departments to build joint county and state work programs to house nonviolent offenders, who could do work in the county and save it thousands of dollars. The sheriff’s departments receive $20 a day to house the inmates, which is half what it would cost to house them at the state penitentiary. But now, MDOC Commissioner Chris Epps said MDOC doesn't the money to help support the programs.

“I talked to the governor and he said he would take a look at a group of inmates, but the jury is still out on that,” Epps said. “Obviously, I will be willing to submit him a list of inmates if necessary, but I'm hoping that the Legislature and governor will give me the $22 million.”
