Prison guard charged with trafficking

A correctional officer at the province's largest prison faces federal charges for allegedly trafficking drugs into Her Majesty's Penitentiary.

Edward Taylor, 30, was escorted into courtroom No. 7 in provincial court in St. John's in handcuffs with his head up and staring straight ahead Tuesday afternoon.

Taylor said nothing during his appearance, where the eight charges against him were read onto the record.

Looking on were a number of high-ranking police and correctional officials, who lined the back bench of the courtroom. The men chatted back and forth casually and refused to comment after Taylor's first appearance.

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary had been investigating drug trafficking in the prison and say they identified Taylor in a sting dubbed Operation Safeguard.
