A Colquitt County (Ga.) Correctional Institution (CCCI) inmate was charged last Wednesday for turning a profit at the county's expense. Lawrence T. Rome Collins, 35, was caught selling county property from the purchasing department as the result of an investigation by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. Former Sheriff Billy Howell, who is likely to be sworn in as warden in Atlanta today, said Collins has been charged with two counts of theft by taking, one of them a felony. County officials are unsure how much property was stolen. The county is beginning inventory today to determine the loss. Investigators also have yet to determine how long the alleged thefts have been going on. Howell has been in place as interim warden since March when Leland Dampier Sr. retired after 33 years of service. |
