S.C. Judge Denies Appeal for Convicted Killer

UNION, S.C. --

A judge has rejected Susan Smith’s request for a new trial on her murder conviction, but she has 20 days to appeal the ruling.

Chief Administrative Judge Lee S. Alford of the Sixteenth Judicial Circuit handed down the decision.

Smith sought a new trial alleging a Fifth Amendment violation, prosecutorial misconduct and ineffective assistance or counsel.

Smith filed the application for post-conviction relief in January. She is serving a life sentence for the murders of her sons Michael and Alex in Union County in 1994. Smith was found guilty at trial in July, 1995.
