| IL Puts Millions into County Jail Upgrade |

The Jersey County Jail now can hold 45 inmates, compared to the 19 inmates that could be housed prior to the completion of a $3.5 million renovation project. “At the rate prisoner housing is needed, this is a temporary fix to our current needs,” Sheriff Mark Kallal last week while giving a tour of the newly renovated facility. The County Board authorized issuing up to $3.5 million in bonds to pay for the renovation and expansion of the Sheriff’s Department/Jail facility. The funds used for the project came from a public safety tax, passed on a referendum in the 2004 primary election. The tax generates about $650,000 a year and is not dependent upon raising property taxes. AAIC Architecture in Edwardsville served as the county’s architectural firm and Jun Construction of Godfrey served as the general contractor on the two-phase project, which began with construction of new additions and ended with interior renovation.
