SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Phillip and Nancy Garrido can talk by telephone in two tightly controlled, five-minute calls over the next six weeks, a judge in California ruled Friday, but they cannot yet visit each other in the El Dorado County jail. The defendants in the kidnapping of Jaycee Lee Dugard can speak if Nancy Garrido decides to make such a call. Jail officials will be allowed to monitor the calls, El Dorado Superior Court Judge Douglas Phimister ruled during a wide-ranging, hourlong hearing on the six-month anniversary of Dugard's being found alive after 18 years of mystery. Nancy Garrido's attorney said his client was overwhelmed at the prospect of speaking to her husband of 29 years, the first conversation they will have since their arrest six months ago.
