| SC Considers Early Release Programs |

Columbia, SC (WACH) - Some South Carolina lawmakers are considering the release of thousands of inmates from the prison system to help save money. The proposal would apply to roughly three thousand non-violent offenders who would be funneled into the probation system. Budget writers are trying to find more and more creative ways to make up for declining revenues and tax cuts. The state Budget and Control Board has agreed to let the SC Departmet of Corrections run at a deficit of up to $29 million this year. Board member and Senate Finance Committee chairman Hugh Leatherman of Florence says it's time for the Corrections Department to look at the early release of non-violent inmates. Supporters say the proposal could save the state millions of dollars but not everyone is on board.
