| Long-Standing Cook County Jail Decree Might End |

Cook County Jail could soon be free from a decades-old order of federal oversight. The so-called Duran consent decree has been in place since 1974. Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart says his administration has tackled the issues that brought about the court order. DART: At the heart of the Duran consent decree, the thing that Duran was firmly about, was overcrowding and sleeping on the floor. We have not had that for about a year, a year and a half now. So really, for all intents and purposes, the Duran consent decree, and the reasons and purposes behind it, will be over. Dart says the Duran consent decree will be replaced with another agreement that calls for some federal oversight at the jail. Those monitors will focus on different areas of the jail, including the corrections department, the hospital at the jail and mental health issues. Read More. |
