One Drug Method Of Execution

Washington state is in the process of changing its method of execution from a three–drug protocol to a one–drug system. The decision could affect the sentence of death row inmate Darold Stenson. His execution is currently stayed. His legal team is challenging the states three–drug method of execution in the state supreme court.

The new execution policy will make Washington state the second in the nation to use the one–drug method. Ohio became the first state to use the system in January following a botched execution in September.

Under the new policy two of the drugs normally used in executions would be eliminated: the paralyzing agent, pancuronium bromide, which is normally the second drug administered; and the third drug, potassium chloride, which produces electrical standstill of the heart. Only the first drug in the series, the sedative sodium thiopental, will be used.

Dick Morgan is the director of the prisons division for the state Department of Corrections. He says the one drug protocol is less complicated for the execution team and also satisfies the view that the three–drug method could cause suffering.

Morgan: "Every expert opinion that we've studied indicates that there is no risk of pain with sodium thiopental."

Meantime, death row inmate Darold Stenson's attorney, Sherilyn Peterson, calls this a victory. She says it's far more human than the current method.
