AUSTIN, Texas - Slipping out for some smokes and heading home broke the rules for a convicted burglar whose residence is a Sugar Land prison. Authorities at a prison lockup used security video from a Houston-area Walmart to confirm that 19-year-old Skyler Steddum was at the store. He returned unnoticed to the fenceless trusty unit. An Austin newspaper reports officials at the Central Unit in Sugar Land never knew Steddum was gone until another inmate snitched on him. John Moriarty, inspector general for the Department of Criminal Justice, says Steddum went out Feb. 23. Investigators did not learn of the unauthorized quick trip until Friday night. Read More. |
