| Cook County Jail Closing Areas to Save |

Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart announced on Thursday the closing of a 600-bed dormitory unit at the county jail and his intent to shut down another 300-bed unit next month as part of a plan that he said could save taxpayers $15 million a year. Dart cited the shrinking inmate population within recent years and various "management methods" for the closures but said he has no delusions that the trend would not change. That's why he plans to keep the jail's 300-bed Division III "mothballed" to be used for future population spikes at the jail on Chicago's West Side. The 600-bed unit that was closed last month in Division II once housed a kitchen in the 1950s. Half of it will be converted into a cafeteria, Dart said. In 2002, the average daily capacity at the jail exceeded 11,000, and many inmates were forced to sleep on the floor or rotate bunk time. Now there are about 8,600 inmates. Read More. |
