| AZ Sheriff Will Take Juvenile Offenders |

Due to Arizona's huge budget deficit, juvenile offenders may hit the street unless something is done. Governor Jan Brewer has proposed eliminating the $63 million dollar State Department of Juvenile Corrections which handles juvenile offenders. Currently, there are over 500 juvenile inmates in the cash strapped Arizona state system, and Joe Arpaio has stepped forward and said he will take them. "We have the systems in place to handle them", Arpaio said in an interview. "I know we can do it cheaper than anyone else". Sheriff Arpaio has been criticized in the past for his unorthodox methods, aggressive street raids, and accusations of racial profiling by his deputies. The reaction to this has been mixed. County administers are unsure if Arpaio has all the resources necessary to handle the increase in these juvenile offenders. Brad Carlyon, Navajo County Attorney said he would be surprised if Maricopa County would be able to provided all of the needed rehabilitative services that juvenile offenders are afforded. "If all Maricopa County is offering is to house them, then it's not meeting the philosophy behind the juvenile justice system.", said Carlyon. "The philosophical issue that the Legislature is having to address is, what is the purpose of the juvenile justice system?" Maricopa County has an accredited high school in its jails, but the health care provider that operates within the Maricopa Jail lost its accreditation last year. A federal judge ruled in 2008 that conditions and food in Arpaio's jails fell below constitutional minimums. Read More. |
