| Prisoner Classification Prevents Escapes |

The Corrections Department has rolled out a new system to calculate a prisoner's security classification intended to help reduce the number of escapes. A review of escapes where prisoners had walked away from work parties and community employment showed the current system was not effective enough at identifying a prisoner's likelihood of escape, Prison Services assistant general manager of operations Leanne Field said. The new system looked at a broader range of factors, including age, the type of offence the prisoner was serving, sentence length and previous sentences. The number of security categories would be increased, and a maximum security classification would be introduced for female prisoners. The changes would tighten the criteria that a prisoner had to meet to be considered for employment in a work party outside the prison, Mrs Field said. Read More. |
