ORLANDO, Fla. -- Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer said the city has approved a contract with the corrections department to have minimum-security prisoners keep medians and common areas in shape. Resident Jeff Scott wants Orlando's "City Beautiful" moniker to keep living up to its name, but it's expensive. "It's gorgeous as I bike around Orlando," Scott said. To save money, the city has been cutting back on cutting its grass, bushes, weeds and on litter pick-up. The city has approved a contract with the Department of Corrections to have up to 16 minimum-security prisoners work each day. The city said inmates will keep medians and common areas in top shape. The cost to pay for off-duty officers to supervise them is less than paying contractors or employees to do the job. Read More. |
