Despite budget cuts the Iowa Department of Corrections wants to hire hundreds of workers. The department saying they've lost so many people, they want to hire around 200 people. Those hires will be spread out over all the state's prisons and community based correction centers. "We're looking at hiring some of the those positions back which are much needed," says Fred Scaletta, Public Relations Director for the Department of Corrections. That need comes after losing 362 employees from attrition and early retirement. Creating a staff shortage. "Our prison population has remained stable over the past couple of years. However, it is starting to go up just a little, not much, but again we want to get up to a staffing level that's consistent with the number of inmates we have in the prison system." The hiring process is still in the very early phases. But the department's director has started the process. The 200-proposed positions would include counselors and fill the void in other areas. "The primary group will be corrections officers and then in the communities looking at probation officers and residential officers in the community corrections facilities." Hiring in the midst of budget cuts doesn't mean the situation is getting better. "We're going by what our needs are. And again we've tossed out the number of around 200. We don't know if that's what the end number will be, but that's an idea at this point." Read More. |
