Increase in Women in New Zealand Prisons

According to the Department's latest Offender Volumes Report, the number of female inmates has risen by 297% since 1986. That is nearly twice the rate of men.

Corrections strategy and research manager, Dr Peter Johnston, says the increase is probably due to a number of factors.

"We've got more female offenders in the community who are committing reasonably serious crime, and are being arrested and processed through the courts," he says. "A greater proportion of those cases are being imprisoned; the sentences have increased in the last three years, and the Parole Board generally is adopting a more conservative attitude towards releasing long-serving prisoners."
