ADRIAN, Mich. — Lansing is offering a one-year trial for a new community corrections program aimed at diverting more people from the Lenawee County Jail. Success, however, is to be measured by a reduction in state prison sentences. A pretrial program proposed by Lenawee County Community Corrections was blocked by state officials in January. The sudden halt after months of work was protested by county court officials who serve on an advisory committee for the community corrections department. “I think we’re at least deserving of an explanation that makes sense,” District Judge James E. Sheridan, chairman of the county committee, said in January. An analysis was requested to support a need for the program and how it would be funded, responded John Cordell of the Michigan Department of Corrections. Planning for the program is back on track, community corrections coordinator Al Navarro said at Wednesday’s advisory committee meeting. The program will be aimed at people who are unable to post bail before going to trial or pleading guilty. Those inmates are not eligible now to participate in jail diversion programs. Read More. |
