COXSACKIE — Three corrections officers and a sergeant were assaulted by an inmate at Coxsackie Correctional Facility Wednesday morning, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Corrections said Thursday. A sergeant was interviewing the inmate, Vaughn Avery, in a recreation room at 9:15 a.m. regarding a grievance when a struggle broke out, spokeswoman Linda Foglia said. “The inmate became agitated and struck the sergeant with his fist in the right side of the (sergeant’s) head,” Foglia said. The sergeant used body holds and pushed Avery against a wall. Three officers came to the sergeant’s assistance and a fourth put Avery in restraints, she said. The inmate, who suffered abrasions in the altercation, was admitted to the prison’s special housing unit and is facing internal discipline. Read More. |
