| Concerns Over Cutting Staff at SCI-Dallas |

John Wilkes III remembers the last time employees were taken down from the perimeter towers at the State Correctional Institute in Dallas, and the two men who took advantage of the opportunity to slip out. For four days, police couldn't find them. Now, the Jackson Township Board of Supervisors chairman is concerned about plans to once again reduce tower staffing at the medium-security facility. "This is crazy. I think those towers are the last line of defense for the residents of the township," he said. "The electronics and all those things are great and they're precautionary, but if someone gets through, we need someone there." The plan would be to cut tower staffing in light of security advancements and improvements and possibly save almost $5 million, according to a press release from the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections. SCI-Dallas is one of five prisons that will be affected. The others are Camp Hill, Cumberland County; Graterford, Montgomery County; Huntingdon, Huntingdon County; and Rockview, Centre County. These are the five oldest prisons in the Commonwealth, and 22 of the state's prisons, including the newest maximum security prisons, do not use perimeter towers, according to the press release. "Over the last several decades, we have spent millions of dollars strengthening our prisons' perimeters and security," state Secretary of Corrections Jeffrey Beard said. "These enhancements, coupled with security improvements made within the prisons, all greatly reduce the need to staff perimeter towers around the clock, without compromising safety inside or outside of our prisons.
