DALLAS – State Sen. Lisa Baker said she has heard the assurances from the State Department of Corrections before and she is not about to accept them this time around. Baker, R-Lehman Township, was quick to respond to the department’s plan to reduce staffing – specifically to once again remove guards from towers at five state facilities, including the State Correctional Institute at Dallas, to save money. In a letter to Secretary of Corrections Jeffrey A. Beard, Baker said: “The last time the towers were de-manned, two inmates escaped from the facility, despite assurances from the department that a video surveillance and perimeter intrusion detection system would provide the necessary protections. My position is clear – cost-cutting cannot compromise public safety.” Baker has asked Beard to schedule a public hearing to discuss the department’s plan to reduce tower staffing at SCI-Dallas. “Residents are understandably troubled,” Baker said. “I think he (Beard) needs to come up here and face the community.” In his release, Beard said advancements in technology and substantial upgrades to perimeter security at the state’s prisons will allow the department to reduce staffing levels at the towers of five facilities without compromising safety. Beard said the move, which is expected to save the state nearly $5 million, will begin in May and will be fully implemented by June. Read More. |
