Prisoner Surrenders, Protest Over

A MAXIMUM security prisoner surrendered to police yesterday morning, ending a two-night protest on the roof of the Borallon Correctional Centre.

Alex Richmond-Sinclair, 25, somehow managed to climb on to the roof of one of the buildings at the Ipswich jail about 11.30am Monday, carrying three large white banners.

The protest triggered a political row yesterday, when Opposition corrective services spokesman Vaughan Johnson accused State Corrective Services Minister Neil Roberts of ignoring problems with security in the prison system.

“He’s in total denial anything’s wrong …despite the string of deaths in custody in the past month and the fact a dangerous prisoner (was) on a roof at Borallon armed with scissors ...” Mr Johnson said.

The government has refused to enter a debate, stating that the incident would be investigated by the chief inspector of prisons.

Exactly how the convicted killer made it on to the roof of a building within the 490-bed maximum security jail is unknown.

Richmond-Sinclair’s protest read: “Prisoners get inadequate medical care = torture: severe physical and mental anguish. Adequate health care is not a privilege, it is a duty of care.”
